Take Me To Your Ambassador, Earthling

The United Nation is set to appoint Mrs. Mazlan Othman, the current Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (or UNOOSA), to serve as Earth’s official ambassador in the event of extraterrestrial contact. Until now, no one person had been designated for this task, and the exact protocols for coordinating any kind of communication or interaction with alien beings have either been embarrassingly unpublicized, utterly non-existent, little understood, or simply filed away and forgotten in a dusty cabinet in a basement back office of some obscure government building. But now it’s OK. Now the aliens can finally contact us with the confidence and assurance that we might actually know what we’re doing. Maybe.

According to the report on the Telegraph, Mrs. Othman will detail her role at a Royal Society conference in Buckinghamshire. She is expected to tell the delegates that the proposal has been prompted by the recent discovery of hundreds of planets orbiting other stars, and which raises the possibility of discovery of extraterrestrial life in the near the future. In another recent talk, Mrs. Othman also said: “The continued search for extraterrestrial communication, by several entities, sustains the hope that some day human kind will received signals from extraterrestrials. When we do, we should have in place a coordinated response that takes into account all the sensitivities related to the subject. The UN is a ready-made mechanism for such coordination.”
