METAL STORM 2380
(Kinzoku Arashi 2380)
Episode 7
"The God of War"

"Lieutenant Taeon Toshio reporting for duty," said Taeon.
Major Danon, the chief of security, gave a nod. He didn't
even look up from the paperwork on his desk. "You're the new
assistant?"
     "Yes, sir."
"Take the monitor station in the next room over there."
Taeon looked where Danon was pointing. There was a room
just starboard of the main security office, stuffed with
computers, consoles, monitor screens, and racks of weapons.
"Yes, sir," said Taeon.
The non-com working the station relinquished his seat to
Taeon and reported back to Danon. Taeon sat down and looked over
the controls.
"Where's the manual?" he asked, not knowing the first thing
about the security monitor operations.
Just then, an alarm light lit up on one of the boards.
"Great," said Taeon. He pushed the light, but nothing happened.
He pushed the button under the light and a blaring alarm screamed
throughout the entire ship. "No! No!" exclaimed Taeon. He hit
the button again and the alarm stopped.
"What are you doing?" yelled Danon from the other room.
"Quit screwing around!"
"There's an alarm light on. It's labeled ComMoD-I. What
the hell is that?"
"Oh, that's just the divercomm monitor listening sensors.
It watches for unauthorized use of divercomm equipment."
"Well, it's on. Someone's using an unauthorized divercomm."
Chief Danon stood up and walked into the security monitor
room. "Hmmm. Call up the status recorders."
     "How?"
"Type 'statrec' on the terminal prompt!" exclaimed Danon.
"Damn incompetence."
Taeon gritted his teeth and typed in the command. "Sorry,
sir. I was just assigned here, you know."
"You should know how to use our equipment then."
Taeon looked at the data on the screen. "Look's like there
was a short, half second blip from an unauthorized divercomm
device. The sensors were unable to lock down a location."
"Very well. I'll report it to the bridge. Probably just an
equipment malfunction. Happens all the time."
Taeon looked up from the boards. What kind of a security
chief was this guy? He glanced back down at the boards and was
shocked to see nearly a dozen alerts light up across the security
monitor console. Such lights labeled as 'DDrive', 'Dcon', 'Nav',
'Helm', 'Shlds', 'Comp', 'Wep', and 'Comm'.
Taeon's mouth dropped open, and a few miscellaneous words
managed to tumble out. "Oh... My... God."
                           *    *    *
Ryo walked into the sim control room and sat down at the
main console. The room was hardly bigger than a closet and would
be cramped as it was, even without the ton of high-tech
electronics crammed inside. At the front of the room was a large
panoramic window overlooking the simulator room. There was a
door on the starboard side which lead out to the sim-room itself.
Two technicians came in from the sim-room door and saluted.
Ryo smiled. He liked his job already.
"First Sergeant Traff and Second Sergeant DeQuent."
"Lieutenant Ryo Gunn," said Ryo. "I'm the new sim-room
chief."
"Yes, sir," said Traff. "Nothing to report at this time,
sir."
"Relax," said Ryo. He looked out the window to the sim-
room. It was filled with mecha simulator pods, some in
operation, some not. "I see that not all the pods are being
used."
"We're overhauling a few of them, sir," said DeQuent.
     "Okay," replied Ryo. "Anything else?"
"A new terrain upgrade package is now available," said
Traff. "But the last chief didn't want it to be installed
because of its size, as we would have to dump one of the older
battlefields to load it. I told him that no one has used the
Jarax Woodlands for about three months, and since the Delta
Woodlands are just as good, it shouldn't be a problem. However,
he did not see fit to grant us permission."
     "A terrain upgrade?" asked Ryo.
"Yes, sir. New hyper-randomized VRscape algorithms, true AI
controlled animals and pedestrians, and expanded realism for just
about everything else."
"Hell, do it!" said Ryo. "Proceed at your own discretion."
Traff and DeQuent smiled. "Thank you, sir."
"And hurry up. I want to check it out myself."
"Yes, sir," replied Traff. He and DeQuent left the control
room and got to work.
Suddenly, an alarm went off, blaring through the room and
corridors. A second later, it stopped. Ryo looked around,
wondering what was going on.
Traff came running into the room. "Sir? What was that?"
"I don't know," said Ryo. "Maybe a malfunction or a drill
or something."
"Well, its off now," said Traff. He turned around and
headed back out to the sim-room.
Just then, another alarm went off. This time accompanied by
an announcement on the intercom.
"Attention!" blared the announcement. It sounded like
Taeon. "All stations red alert. Diverdrive has failed. Drive
control has failed. Navigation and sensors have failed. Helm
control has failed. Shields have failed. All weapons systems
are down. All divercomm communications systems are out.
Computer is..."
Ryo glanced around the room. He looked at one of the
network terminal displays, just in time to see the screen go
blank. The words 'Death to the Empire!' scrolled across the
display.
"What the hell?" exclaimed Taeon over the intercom. He must
have seen it too.
The computer screen went blank again. The intercom switched
off. The lights flickered, then returned to normal as the backup
generators kicked in. The computer screens returned, but only
with network error messages.
"Sir," said Traff, as he stepped back into the control room.
"I think there's a problem with the ship's data systems network."
"No kidding," said Ryo. "Every system on this ship just
crashed!"
     "Sorry, sir, I..."
"Forget it," said Ryo. He stood up and headed for the exit.
"Take over. I've got something important to attend to."
                           *    *    *
Ryo jogged into his room. A minute later, he charged back
out and headed straight for the main security office. His
quarters had been ransacked. Only one item was missing. The
holodisk.
"Taeon!" exclaimed, bursting into the security office.
"What?" called Taeon from the security monitor room.
"I'm still in charge here," stated Major Danon. "If you
have a problem, please explain it to me in a calm, coherent
voice. Now, what is your name?"
"Sorry, sir," said Ryo. "The fate of the Empire is at stake
here, so I need to talk to Taeon."
"And you're name is what?" asked Danon, calm and
indifferent.
     "Second Lieutenant Ryo Gunn."
"Okay... And what seems to be the problem?"
Taeon walked out of the security monitor room and approached
Ryo. "What's going on?"
"Kay, or, er... the spy, ransacked my room and stole..." Ryo
paused. He had never told Taeon about the importance of his
holodisk... "Stole my holodisk."
     "Huh?" asked Taeon.
"Someone stole a holodisk of yours," said Danon. He wrote
it down on a sheet of paper. "I'm sorry but you will have to
wait. We have other, more important problems to deal with at the
moment, seeings how our entry systems network has collapsed and
all."
     "A holodisk?" asked Taeon.
"Yes," said Ryo. "It was a message from my father which
told me to keep it safe at all cost. I suspect the holodisk may
have some important data stored on it somewhere, possibly
encrypted. At the end of his message, my father spoke the same
cryptic words which you heard in your dream."
"What?" asked Taeon. "I don't understand! Why didn't you
tell me about this earlier? We might could have done something!"
"I don't know," replied Ryo. "I just wanted to keep it
private. But we can't worry about that right now. I think Kay
is making her big break."
     "Kay who?" asked Danon.
"Kay Sabre. I think she's the spy," said Ryo.
"Hmmm," said Danon. "I'll send a team out to bring her in
for questioning."
"Great. We volunteer," said Ryo. He pushed Taeon toward
the door. "C'mon, let's go get her."
"Oh, the network's coming back up," said Danon. He studied
the terminal screen on his desk. "Looks like it's booted back to
default parameters. Most everything seems to have been erased.
I see twenty percent of ship's function have been restored.
Well, that's good."
Ryo and Taeon ran out into the hall and headed down an
arbitrary corridor. They weren't heading to any particular
place, but were hoping to find Kay Sabre somewhere along the way.
"This is the Captain," blared the intercom. Apparently,
someone had managed to get the intercom working again. "A mecha
has been manually launch from mecha bay 3."
"That's our wing's bay!" exclaimed Taeon.
"Head for the mecha bay," said Ryo.
"All mecha pilots are ordered to report to your designated
mecha and launch immediately. The First, Second, and Third Wings
will pursue the escaping mecha. All other wings are ordered to
take position around the ship to protect it in case of an enemy
attack. The escaping mecha is an Ironclad V Raptor, which we
believe is being piloted by the spy who is trying to escape with
classified information. Use deadly force. If the GSC appear,
your primary objective is to stop the rouge V Raptor at all
costs. Captain Armour out."
"This had better be the last time no one believes us,"
stated Ryo. They rounded a corner and rushed into the Guardian
Squadron prep room.
Everyone in their squadron arrived at room, with the
exception of Kay Sabre. Katana Falcon entered from the mecha
bay, already prepped in her mecha pilot suit. "Looks like you
were right," she said to Taeon and Ryo. "Kay just took off in her
new V Raptor. Get to your mecha and launch. Odin and Viper
Squadrons have already departed. You guys are slower than rocks.
Move it!"
Destiny Gray calmly finished putting on his suit and walked
out of the prep room. Half a minute later, Ryo zipped up his
suit, and grabbed his gloves and helmet. He ran out into the
mecha bay and headed for his mecha. Taeon and the rest of
Guardian Squadron followed close behind.
Destiny's Ironclad L-Geimour launched out of the mecha bay,
followed by a few dozen other mecha in the Third Wind. Ryo
scrambled up the rope ladder to his mecha's cockpit. The cockpit
closed and sealed and the mecha powered up.
     Taeon's voice came over Ryo's earpiece. "I see you've got a
new mecha."
     "Yeah. An RZD-20 Dragonfly."
"Dragonfly?" asked Taeon. "Never heard of it."
"It just came out. It's basically a modified L-Geimour with
a little less armor, but some extra equipment. I put in the
request for it just before we left for the academy, so I haven't
had a chance to try it out. It has a custom made super-beam
cannon mounted on the right arm. It's really powerful, but
drains an entire fusion cell every time it fires. I have to keep
a few spare cells in my leg compartment. I also have an energy
scythe to use for close range combat. It's sort of like your
beam sword, but forms an energy blade like a scythe. Best of
all, this thing has a twelve megawatt force field system."
"Pretty nice. I'm still using the old Storm Giant," said
Taeon. "I don't have any major changes on mine. My rifle's a bit
more powerful, and my thrusters have better acceleration, and my
armor's upgraded some as well."
"Enough talk, let's hit vacuum," said Ryo as mecha was
loaded into a launch tube. Seconds later, the tube's electro-
gravitic field accelerated him to several hundred kilometers per
hour and catapulted him out into space. Ryo guided his mecha
into position and leveled it out. He activated his thrusters and
headed toward the other mecha in the Third Wing.
Seconds later, Taeon launched, followed quickly by Michael
and Lynn.
"Ryo," said Taeon. "My sensors are picking up elevated
psion particles."
"I know," replied Ryo. "Looks like a ship is coming out of
diverspace."
Taeon looked up at his cockpits view screen. It zoomed in
on a distant diver anomaly. Suddenly, there was a brilliant
flash and a massive GSC warship appeared. "The Victorious!"
exclaimed Taeon. "That's Briggs' flagship!"
"We're in trouble," said Michael, coming over the channel.
"This is Major Falcon to all squadrons in the Third Wing.
The GSC Victorious has just been spotted. It's launching all
mecha squadrons. Odin, Viper, and Dragon Squadrons are ordered
to intercept the enemy mecha. Guardian and Banshee Squadrons,
you will attempt to capture or destroy Kay Sabre's mecha."
A number of voices acknowledge over the channel.
"Guardian Squadron and Banshee Squadron to channel eight,"
stated Destiny Gray.
Ryo flipped his radio to channel eight. On it, he heard
Destiny continue. "You heard the Major. Proceed to intercept
Sabre's V Raptor."
"That brings a new meaning to the word 'Intercept-Her',"
said Michael.
"Shut-up, Sergeant Avenger," said Taeon, happy that he could
pull rank on him now.
     "Sorry, sir," grumbled Michael.
"Sharpen up," said Destiny. "I have thirteen incoming
contacts. Dremon, Johnson, Immanth, intercept contact Alpha,
Beta, Capella, Delta, and Echo."
"Yes, sir," came the replied from the pilots of Banshee
Squadron, as they broke to attack.
"Pollux, Rezner, follow me in intercepting contacts Foxtrot,
Gamma, Hyper, and India. Avenger, Firewolf, Toshio, and Gunn,
attack targets Juno, Kilo, Leo, and Muon."
     "Yes, sir," all replied.
"Break and attack," ordered Destiny Gray.
Taeon grabbed the controls of his mecha and zoomed in on
contact Kilo. He checked the identification of the other targets
as well. "Looks like we're up against Gallants."
"Oh, I'm shaking," said Ryo, calmly.
Taeon smiled and watched the distance to target run down to
five thousand meters. He switched on his missile jammer and
readied his new 'nova lance' rifle. The targeting computer was
having a hard time locking on to Kilo. Whoever this guy was,
thought Taeon, he was good.
Suddenly, all the approaching GSC mecha launched their long-
range heavy missiles. Taeon wasn't terribly concerned. After
all, the missiles had simple electronic homing systems and could
easily be fooled by his missile jammer. Sure enough, the three
anti-mecha rockets heading at him missed by half a kilometer.
The targeting system still had not locked on, but Taeon
fired anyway. He swept the beam across the path of Kilo and the
electro-plasma energy beam sliced through the Gallant's upper
torso. The lower half exploded as the fusion core spilled out of
its reactor system and the top quarter of the mecha tumbled out
of control into the depths of the endless void.
He glanced down at another monitor. Displayed was a
computer generated rendering of the battle. He could use a small
trackball to guide the view around so he could watch any part of
the battle in the surrounding area. As he panned the view over
to Ryo's mecha, he expected to see Ryo use his new super-cannon,
but instead he locked the cannon securely on his right arm and
pulled out the energy scythe. A seething vortex of charged
energy materialized from out of the staff-like weapon. Through
the magic of gravity manipulation, the pool of coherent particle
radiation curved into a scythe-like blade.
The Dragonfly mecha swung the energy scythe back as it came
into range of one of the Gallant's. The Gallant peppered the
Dragonfly with bursts of explosives high caliber bullets from its
Vulcan machine gun, but they proved ineffective against the
mecha's powerful force shields and armor.
Ryo swung the scythe down on the Gallant and cleaved it
completely in half, straight down the center. "I'm unstoppable
in this thing," stated Ryo as the Gallant spun away, and exploded
behind him.
Taeon panned his view out and did a quick sweep of the
entire battle. Michael and Lynn had taken out their targets with
ease. But a second wave was coming in. Just then, Taeon caught
something on his long-range sensors. "Ryo, I've got a bead on
Kay's V Raptor."
"I don't. But, you have better sensors than I do. What's
the coordinates?"
     Taeon rattled them off.
Destiny must have been listening in, as he reacted before
Ryo could even replied. "Okay, listen up," said Destiny. "I'm
also tracking a number of heavy assault GSC mecha and one very
heavy mecha of unknown design. They are on a rendezvous course
for Sabre's mecha, and are obviously her escorts. Everyone in
Guardian and Banshee Squadrons, proceed at full power to
intercept Sabre and those mecha. I'll... Ah!"
"Gray!" exclaimed Taeon. He panned the VR view over to
Destiny's location. A swarm of Moray class mecha had fallen on
to the group of mecha Destiny was in. The other three members of
the Banshee Squadron turned around and were heading back to
assist Gray, Pollux, and Rezner.
"Guardian Squadron," said Destiny. "I'm under heavy fire
and I don't think I can get around them. Banshee Squadron and I
will hold off these Coalies. It's up to you to stop Sabre."
     "Yes, sir," answered Ryo.
"I'm hit!" exclaimed someone over the comm.
     "Rezner, eject!" yelled Destiny.
Taeon watched as Rezner's Raptor X exploded in a hellish
fireball.
"Damn," grumbled Destiny. "Guardian Squadron, move it!"
"You heard the boss," said Michael. His V Raptor blasted on
ahead.
Ryo, Taeon, and Lynn followed after him.
"Look's like we've got to deal with Kay's Raptor, four
Gallants, two Morays, a Titan, and a really, really big mecha,"
said Ryo.
     "That's a lot," tallied Michael.
"Michael, Lynn, you take out the four Gallants and join us
after your done with them," ordered Ryo.
"Right-o. I mean, yes, sir," said Michael.
     "Yes, sir," replied Lynn.
"So we only have to take on the big boys?" asked Taeon.
"Looks like it," said Ryo. "Why don't you head for the two
Morays. I'll try to take down that really big mecha with my
super-beam cannon."
     "Good luck," said Taeon.
Ryo powered up the super-beam cannon. The weapon slide into
position on his right arm and the huge barrel extended another
five meters out from there.
"Power nominal," report the Dragonfly's computer.
The targeting cross hairs lined up with the Really Big Mecha
and the lock on signal rang out. He triggered the cannon.
A flood of fusion energy erupted from the barrel of the
Dragonfly's cannon, and the devastating energy beam washed over
the enemy super-mecha. Ryo grinned with the assurance that the
menace had been destroyed. But when the blinding flash from the
beams destructive power passed a second later, the relatively
unscathed war machine continued, unhampered, on its course.
Ryo almost let out a yelp when he saw its unharmed
condition. He ejected the spent fusion cell from his main cannon
and loaded in a fresh one. "I don't believe it!" he yelled.
"That should have destroyed anything. Taeon? Did you see that?"
"What?" he yelled back on the comm. "I'm busy fighting
Morays!" He shoved the barrel of his nova rifle into the chest
of one of the attacking Moray and fired. The beam of energy
clawed into the mecha's torso, vaporizing the interior. He
pushed aside the burning hulk of the gutted mecha, and launched
away. "Now what did you say?"
"I shot the super-mecha with my main cannon and it had no
effect. That thing must have a force shield or something."
"It's called Senso Kami!" came a sinister voice over the
open broadcast channel.
Ryo flipped over to channel zero. "Briggs?" he ask, hopping
it wasn't.
"War God," repeated Briggs. "Because this is War and I am
God."
"You've got a big ego problem," said Taeon who had also
switched over to channel zero.
"Silence!" barked Briggs. "I want to assure you Ryo Gunn
that, whether you know it or not, you have severed the Coalition
well today."
"I did nothing of the sort!" replied Ryo.
"As I said, you were quite unaware of it," said Briggs.
"Nevertheless, I now have the data from your flagship and the
data that you..." Briggs paused. "Oh, forgive me, Ryo. Perhaps
you were unaware of the project your parents were apart of?"
"What are you talking about?" demanded Ryo.
"I wonder... Were they Imperial subjects or Coalition
agents, Ryo? Perhaps they were neither. Or both. I was there
too, Ryo Gunn. I was one of the few to escape the World of the
Damned."
Ryo clenched his fist and slammed it against the cockpit
control board. "Shut-up! My parents were killed by pirates!"
"Don't live your life as a lie!" replied Briggs. "There's a
place for you in the New Empire. Join me!"
"Never!" replied Ryo. He swung his main cannon around and
aimed it at the War God. But the enemy Titan had positioned
itself between Ryo and Briggs' mecha. "Dammit. I can't get a
clear shot at him. Well, that Titan's dead." He fired the
cannon.
The thick beam of energy rippled out of the cannon and
exploded into the Titan. The ninety-five ton mecha was blasted
apart, and exploded in a looming ball of fire.
"So be it!" said Briggs. He switched off the channel.
"Ryo," said Taeon. "My sensors detect that Kay's mecha is
transmitting something back to the Victorious on the data
channel."
     "Well, jam it!" replied Ryo.
Taeon grabbed the controls and dove his mecha away from a
rail round fired from the last Moray. "I don't have a comm
jammer! Just a missile jamming system."
     "Are you in firing range?"
     "Yes."
"Then jam her the old fashion way. Burn her!"
Taeon targeted the V Raptor with his nova rifle. Back on
channel zero, he sent a signal to Kay. "Good bye, Kay," he said.
"You're too late," replied Kay. "I've transmitted all the
data collected from the Vigilant."
But not from Ryo's holodisk, he thought. "You know," he
said, as he grabbed the weapons control stick. "I have had many
cases of love that were just infatuation. But this hatred I feel
for you is the real thing."
The beam of energy stabbed into the back of her V Raptor.
Fire exploded from its thrusters as the main engine ruptured.
The entire right side explode open like dynamite in a tin can.
The escape pod jettisoned, but it went spiraling out of control,
damaged by the blast.
Taeon quickly scanned the escape pod for signs of life. He
swallowed when the data came back that the right side of the pod
was missing, completely open to hard vacuum. One life sign was
detected, but fading fast.
The War God swooped down and headed for the spiraling escape
pod. On its way, a massive shoulder mounted nuclear beam cannon
flipped up into position. The huge mecha turned toward Taeon.
Briggs' voice came over the channel, twisted with hatred.
"You will die, whoever you are!" A surge of energy began to
build up inside the massive cannon.
Taeon hit the thrusters and rocketed away as fast as he
could, though he knew he wouldn't be able to escape the War God's
wrath. He had but one chance.
Taeon spotted the last Moray, positioned just off his left
flank and rocketed toward it. The Moray pilot was surprised by
this sudden action, and failed to react in time. Taeon took the
control stick and made the Storm Giant swat the Moray's rail
rifle aside. He dropped his own gun, then grabbed the enemy
mecha in a great bear hug.
The War God fired. A torrential beam of atomic fire, which
looked as if it should have come from a carrier's anti-ship
cannon, blasted toward him. Taeon maneuvered around and
positioned the struggling Moray between him and the energy blast
from the War God.
No more than a microsecond later, the river of energy
flooded over him and his captive. The Moray vanished in a cloud
of ions almost instantly, along with the Storm Giant's arms,
legs, thruster wings, and head.
The last wave of the energy washed over what little remained
of Taeon's mecha. He held on to his seat as alarms blared
through the cockpit. Radiation count was almost at red line and
the external temperature was nearing the vapor point of iridium.
If the energy surge had lasted one microsecond longer, he would
have been vaporized. But it didn't. The War God's weapon
capacitor was drained and had to recharge before it could fire
again.
Mean while, Ryo watched in terror as his friend's mecha was
vaporized. Or so he thought. When the energy beam cleared, his
sensors reported that the Storm Giant's torso was still intact
and one life sign was detected inside.
He turned his attention back to the War God. "Briggs!" Ryo
yelled over channel zero.
Briggs didn't respond. His mecha grabbed Kay's escape pod
and blasted back toward the Victorious at full thrust. Ryo
headed after him, but the High General had too much of a head
start. He would never be able to catch up in time.
"Damn!" cursed Ryo. "They got away with the data and my
holodisk!"
He then remembered the massive blow out on the escape pod.
"Unless..." He scanned the surrounding space for the small, five
centimeter disk. There it was, floating a hundred meters away
from the broiled frame of the V Raptor.
"Yes!" exclaimed Ryo. "You lost this round Briggs. And
you'll continue to lose so long as I live!"
                           *    *    *
Ryo turned the busted, carbon seared holodisk over in his
hand. The casing was melted on one side. The other side had
several cracks running through it.
"So," said Taeon. "Briggs wanted your favorite little
holodisk. Must have had a really cool movie on it."
He knew Taeon was just joking, but didn't find it very
funny. Ryo sat down on the sofa. He looked out the window at
the array of stars which specked the endless night of space.
"Whatever was on this holodisk, however important or earthshaking
the data was... At least Briggs doesn't have it."
"But he has the specs on the psi-amp," said Katana as she
walked into the officers' lounge.
"Major," said Ryo. He stood and saluted. Taeon did
likewise.
     "At ease," she said.
"He might have more than that," said Taeon. "We are only
sure that Kay downloaded the data on the psi-amp. She could have
downloaded much, much more."
"I hope not," said Katana. "Anyway, you did a good job out
there, but we lost a lot of good people. The Banshee squadron
was almost totally wiped out while covering your rear."
     "And Destiny?"
"He made it. So did Michael, Lynn, and Lieutenant Pollux."
"What was all that stuff Briggs was saying?" asked Taeon.
     "I don't know," said Ryo.
"You have to tell us, Lieutenant," said Katana. "Fifteen of
our men died out there and I think that disk in your hand has
something to do with it."
"I really don't know what he meant," said Ryo. "There must
have been some other information coded on this disk that I don't
know about. I've always suspected that my parents had been
working on some highly secret project. I thought it was for the
ITR. Maybe it was for the GSC. Maybe it wasn't for either, just
like Briggs said. Briggs also said he was somehow involved. But
I don't know anything about it."
Katana nodded. "Dr. Chrome might be able to recover the
information on the holodisk's data crystal. Take it down to his
lab and ask him to see what he can do."
     Ryo nodded.
"I don't know what the deal is between you and Briggs," said
Katana. "I take your word that you don't know either. But I
have a feeling that your enigmatic relationship will prove to be
our greatest asset against him."
That, or our greatest liability, thought Ryo.
